Story behind:
Last year I listened to a podcast about a handful of amazing women throughout time. So many of them we’ve barely heard about, seeing only 0,5 % of our written world history surrounds female legends.
This picture is inspired by one of these women. Her story made a deep impact on so many levels. Her name was Jenny Kammersgaard, a Danish long distance swimmer, who in 1938 swam from Gedser, Denmark all the way to Germany, Warnemünde - 110 kilometres. She asked to be entertained with stories and music during the hard trip through the cold water. There are stories about how she sometimes fell a sleep, but her body kept on swimming. My collage is a result of how I imagined this journey, as I listened to the story.
Being a former competitive swimmer myself, the story brought up lots of feelings - recalling the dedication and stubbornness from exercising the sport, but also the love for water. Especially saltwater. Mixed with some of my own fears - what this open water is hiding - the darkness of the underwater world. Hope you like my picture. What an inspiration: Jenny Kammersgaard /bølgebryder!
