Story behind creating the original piece:
‘Kræn Wester’s gab’ - an interactive piece. As your hand approaches the picture, it will echo the mighty crashes of waves and a distant call of seagulls - a maritime melody, choreographed by the dance of your hand.
The ‘active’ material I used for this picture is copper. I peeled old HiFi cables, extracted the copper, and woven it into the waves, so they run in different paths that are all connected to a mini computer and a speaker - hidden behind the picture.
Creating this wave has been an experimental journey that I’ve been working on since 2021, with some help from my old workshop buddy, Andreas, as the technology was quite tricky.
The idea behind it has been to create a piece that captures and embodies the great wildness and beauty of the North Sea. I’ve always been drawn to the sea (as many of my pictures may reveal). I grew up on the west coast of Denmark, and as me and my siblings were children of parents who taught swimming, the scent of chlorine was a familiar presence in my home, and we all became competitive swimmers. So I’ve always felt as though an eternal tide runs through my veins, now intertwined with saltwater. I try to embrace the sea a couple of times a week, sometimes just for a cold dip, but when the energy is there, I windsurf.
It was within the surf community that I found my title. I asked a group for ‘Old School Windsurfers’ on advice for nicknames of the North Sea - maybe from poetry or from local slang - and that’s where ‘Kræn Wester’ came up. It resonated deeply, and coupled with ‘Gab’ (yawn), it embodies my profound respect for this ocean, - tinged with a sense of its inherent danger. The yawn seems to beckon…well, almost consuming you.
Inside each picture, I’ve embedded an audio file accessible via a QR code. A secret gateway to the sea hidden in the wave.
