Story behind the creation.
The original piece Kræn Wester’s Gab is an interactive work that responds to the
viewer’s presence. As a hand approaches the surface, the piece emits the sound
of crashing waves accompanied by distant seagull calls, forming a subtle maritime
soundscape activated through movement.
The interactive element is created using copper, extracted from reclaimed HiFi cables
and woven into the composition of the waves. These conductive paths are connected
to a small computer and a speaker concealed behind the work, allowing the surface to
function as both image and interface.
The piece is the result of an extended experimental process developed over several
years, beginning in 2021, with technical collaboration and support from a friend.
Conceptually, the work seeks to capture and embody the raw beauty and untamed
force of the North Sea. This connection is rooted in personal experience: growing up
on the west coast of Denmark, surrounded by the culture of swimming and the
presence of the sea, which continues to play a central role in my life.
The title emerged from within the windsurfing community, where “Kræn Wester” was
suggested as a colloquial or poetic reference to the North Sea. Combined with “Gab”
(meaning “yawn”), the title evokes both a sense of awe and an awareness of the sea’s
latent danger—suggesting an opening that both invites and threatens to engulf.
