This artwork stands out from my other creations, as its foundation has been entirely different from my usual process. She is the result of a kind of self-reflection, and the image recalls emotions I have experienced on an inner journey. A handful of times in my life, I have embarked on what one might call spiritual journeys, delving into the depths of my inner self with the aid of jungle medicine. The last of these journeys, over two years ago, took an unexpected turn for me. Since then, I’ve been working on this piece, and it has been a form of therapeutic work for me.
Certain feelings and experiences are impossible for me to put into words, so I do what I do best - attempt to express them visually. And with this particular work, it feels so meaningful. I cannot precisely articulate what the image is meant to convey; it’s a jumble of emotions mixed with a mini-trauma. However, during my journey, I experienced eye contact between myself as an infant, Mother Earth, and my own mother. It represents a moment when a myriad of puzzle pieces fell into place for me.
So, welcome to my “Pachamama” artwork. Brave to use that word, I know. But it’s an image of love and maternal protection. That being said, I choose not to delve deeper into the additional narratives within the work. It is somewhat private, and besides, the image itself is quite mysterious - even to me, and I’d like to preserve that mystery.
